TECHNICAL BULLETIN #33 - Rev 1.00 (07/16/97) =========================================================================== TITLE : Procomm Plus 32 Technical FAQ PRODUCT: Procomm Plus 4.5 =========================================================================== This document is a collection of frequently asked technical questions (FAQs) about Procomm Plus 32. ASPECT ------ Q: How can a get a printed copy of the ASPECT reference materials? A: From your Windows desktop, click Start | Programs | Procomm Plus | Procomm Plus Utilities | ASPECT Help. Select a topic and click the Print button. Repeat these steps for each topic you wish to print. Q: When I double click on an ASPECT script from Windows Explorer the ASPECT editor opens, but the script does not load. If I use FILE | OPEN it works fine. Why doesn’t double clicking on the script from Explorer load the script in the ASPECT editor? A: Check your association for scripts. From within Explorer click VIEW | OPTIONS | FILE TYPES (choose the ASPECT source). Click on the OPEN action and click EDIT. There needs to be a "%1" (with quotes) after the path in APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM THIS ACTION. Removing that removes long filename support. CONNECTIONS ----------- Q: How do I configure Procomm Plus 32 to use my NASI connection? A: Procomm Plus 32 ships with Novell’s WIN2NCS. Install and configure this to work with Windows 95. Q: Why do I receive the "Port in Use - Unable to Open TAPI" message when I select Modem Command Mode from the Menu command options? A: By selecting the Menu option, you are trying to grab the port similar to selecting Direct Connect - ComX. Procomm Plus tries to talk to the modem by sending the command "ATE1V1Q0^M" to the modem. If the modem does not respond, Procomm Plus responds with the above message. Possible solutions: 1. Your external modem could be turned off. Turn it on. 2. Another program has control of the port. Close all programs. Verify this by using HyperTerminal to access the port. DIAL-UP NETWORKING ------------------ Q: The Connect To dialog includes a Save Password checkbox which is disabled. How do I enable this setting? A: You need to do one of two things: 1. Install the Client for Microsoft Networks client in the Network applet of the Control Panel if it is not already installed. 2. If the Client for Microsoft Networks is already installed, but the Save Password checkbox is still disabled, your password file may be corrupt. To correct the situation, delete all files with the extension .PWL from your \WINDOWS directory. WARNING: this option will remove all passwords from the system and you will be forced to enter passwords for all network connections. FAX TROUBLESHOOTING ------------------- Q: Why does Word cause a GPF or segment failure when I try to fax a Word document from Procomm Plus? A: Occasionally, a timing problem with DDE commands sent to Word during the creation of a fax document causes a GPF or segment failure. To fix the timing problem, add the following entry to the PW4.INI. [Options] FaxDDEDelay=2000 The FaxDDEDelay INI setting by default is 1000 and represents the amount of time between each DDE command sent to Word during the creation of the fax document. Q: Why do I receive "Can’t Find PW4FAX.DRV", "Error Generating Coversheet" or "Error Generating Memo" messages when attempting to send a fax? A: You probably upgraded from Procomm Plus for Windows 95 to Procomm Plus 32 and the PW4FAX.DRV (fax printer driver) was not copied to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Close Procomm Plus and copy PW4FAX.DRV from the \PROCOMM PLUS\WINSYS directory to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Once copied, rename the PW4.PRM (located in the home \PROCOMM PLUS directory) file to something like PW4PRM.OLD. Reboot the computer and launch Procomm Plus. A new fax driver should reside in Control Panel, Printers. Q: When I attempt to send a fax from WordPerfect 7.0 it appears in landscape mode. How do I correct this? A: Follow these steps: 1. Within WordPerfect, select FORMAT | PAGE | PAGE SIZE to open the Page Size dialog. 2. Click NEW to open the New Page Size dialog, and give the new page definition a meaningful name. 3. Set the Type option to Other and Size option to Letter. 4. Set the Width to 8.462" and Height to 11". 5. Click OK to close the New Page Size dialog, and then click OK to close the Page Size dialog. After you have created a new page size definition, this definition will be available for all your documents. Select it before you print to the Procomm Plus 32 Fax printer. INSTALL ------- Q: My virus protection software detected a virus during installation. Did install give me a virus? A: PC-cillin by Trend Micro Incorporated incorrectly detects a "Word.Generic" virus in PWWRD.DOT. This Word document template does not contain a virus; all files are checked for viruses before they are shipped. Q: I received a memory error during installation, but I have plenty of space on the drive to which Procomm Plus 32 is to be installed. A: Low disk space on the drive used for TEMP files can cause installation errors. Make sure that this drive has at least 5 MB of available disk space. INTERNET UTILITIES ------------------ Q: I just loaded Procomm Plus 32 and noticed that Microsoft has patches/updates for IE (Internet Explorer). Do I need to download IE and apply the patches/upgrades to it or can I apply the patches/updates directly to Procomm Plus 32? A: You can apply the patches/updates directly. However, you are not applying them to Procomm Plus. Procomm Plus 32 uses Internet Explorer. All IE components that Procomm Plus uses are stored on your hard drive in the same place as a stand-alone version of IE. Q: I used the Menu option (View | Full Screen) to switch my Web browser display to full screen. How do I get back to the regular display? A: Use the keystroke sequence Ctrl-Shift-F to return to the regular display. Q: Do Procomm Plus 32’s Mail and News clients support multiple servers and accounts? A: Yes, the database path for mail and news give Procomm Plus the ability to support multiple news servers and multiple mail accounts on the machine. To change mail or news databases, change the current News Option Set or Mail Option Set in Setup | Internet | Internet Connection to the database table you want. For instance, if you have two news databases called DATASTORM and SOCKET, you can switch between them by changing the News Option Set. When you change options sets, a mode switch from news to nets or mail to mail occurs so the new database can load. You can quickly tell which option set is in use by looking at what is displayed above the tree folder on the left-hand side of Procomm Plus. MODEM SETUP ----------- Q: My modem is not directly supported by Windows 95 or Windows NT. How can I get an .INF file to work with Procomm Plus? A: Procomm Plus works best if you have an updated Windows Information (.INF) file for you modem. In most cases, your modem manufacturer will provide this with your modem. However, Quarterdeck has included an INF Builder utility that can generate .INF files for over 1,200 different modems. The utility (PWINF4.EXE) is located in your \PROGRAMS directory. Q: Does Procomm Plus 32 support Caller ID and Distinctive Ring? A: Since Procomm Plus 32 is TAPI compliant, Caller ID and Distinctive Ring are handled by TAPI. However, neither Caller ID nor Distinctive Ring are available with UNIMODEM, a function of Windows’ TAPI. In order to get Caller ID and Distinctive Ring to work under Windows 95, you will need to install UNIMODEMV. UNIMODEMV can be downloaded from Microsoft’s Web page (http://www.microsoft.com/). Note: Adaptive Answer is not supported by either UNIMODEM or UNIMODEMV. Some modifications were done to Procomm Plus 32’s FAPI to make Adaptive Answer functional. Caller ID is not supported by Windows NT 4.0 at this time. REMOTE ------ Q: Can I connect to Procomm Plus 32 Remote Host using Windows Terminal, HyperTerminal, Dial Up Networking, or any other terminal program? A: No. You must configure Procomm Plus 32 Remote Client to connect to the Remote Host. Q: Can I connect to Procomm Plus 32 Remote Host using Procomm Plus for Windows 95 Remote Client. A: Running both client and host under Windows 95, you can connect between the two different versions. If Procomm Plus 32 Remote Host is configured under Windows NT 4.0 and you attempt to connect using the Procomm Plus for Windows 95 Remote Client, the key sequence can’t be sent to the host. REMOTE ACCESS SERVICE (RAS) --------------------------- Q: When I attempt to connect to an Internet address, RAS will not auto-dial. What is the problem? A: Windows NT 4.0 Remote Access Service (RAS) will not auto-dial if you have TCP/IP bound to a LAN adapter. The following procedure details how to enable RAS auto-dialing. Note: After following this procedure, you will lose TCP/IP support via your LAN. However, reverse the steps below to re-enable TCP/IP for your network adapter. 1. Open the NT 4.0 Control Panel. 2. Open the Network Control Panel applet. 3. Select the Bindings tab in the Network applet. 4. In the Show Bindings For drop-down list, select All Adapters. The default setting is all services. 5. The list box displays your LAN adapter, such an Intel Ether Express 16 LAN Adapter, and one or more Remote Access WAN Wrapper items. Click on the "+" next to LAN Adapter to expand the list of installed transports/protocols. 6. Select TCP/IP Protocol and press the Disable button. The icon for the TCP/IP Protocol will change from a network cable to a red circle with a line through it. 7. Repeat step #6 for WINS Client(TCP/IP). 8. Press OK in Network window to apply the changes. 9. You will be prompted to restart Windows. You must restart for your changes to take affect. After you complete this procedure, RAS will attempt to auto-dial your ISP. Whenever you attempt to make a TCP/IP connection, you will see a dialog with a message similar to "Cannot reach ftp.quarterdeck.com Error! Bookmark not defined...Do you want to dial a remote network?" Click Yes, Dial in this dialog, and RAS displays the RAS dialing dialog that allows you to select the ISP connection that you want to dial. ============================================================================ To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
